Oeschinensee, Kandersteg

Lake Oeschinen

With its moss-covered rocks, a magnificent view on the Bernese Alps and crystal-clear water, it doesn’t come as a surprise that the Lake Oeschinen is said to be one of Switzerland’s most beautiful lakes.

Above Kandersteg, at 1578 m above sea level, lies the idyllic Lake Oeschinen. This mountain lake is at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch” and puts all visitors under its spell with its smooth surface and its turquoise colour. The surroundings of the 111-ha-large lake are perfect for walks, whether you have small children, you are a senior citizen or an experienced hiker; there are different routes for everyone. The Lake Oeschinen, however, also caters for adrenaline junkies who can experience the thrill of a fast-paced ride on the mountain coaster.

Enjoy pure nature

From the mountain station a footpath leads to the lake in about 30 minutes. The e-shuttle bus runs between the mountain station of the gondola lift and the Berhotel Oeschinensee every half hour. Persons with reduced mobility have priority at all times. Please note that the availability of seats for other travellers is limited.

Whether it is swimming, hiking, fishing or having a BBQ – a day at the Lake Oeschinen is full of variety.

In winter

Small but lovely – the Lake Oeschinen ski area: The gentle slopes of the ski area are perfect for beginners. There are three different T-bar lifts to practise your first moves on skis. The more advanced skiers can let off steam on the downhill slope towards the eight-person cable car. Skiers and snowboarders can enjoy a total of 12 km of slopes. The different winter hiking trails around and on the frozen lake, the ice climbing, the tobogganing slope and ice fishing are all favourites during the winter months.
