Aare Gorge

Meiringen, Haslital
Aareschlucht, Jungfrau Region

The Aare Gorge is one of the most popular excursion destinations in the Bernese Oberland. Over thousands of years, the Aare River has carved deep into the limestone, creating a 1.4-kilometre gorge with rock walls up to 200 metres high. Walkways and tunnels let you experience this natural spectacle up close in around 45 minutes. Cool on hot days, atmospheric in the rain and beautifully illuminated in the evenings during July and August. Open daily from 3 April to 1 November 2026.

The Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge impresses with powerful waterfalls, romantic grottos and striking rock formations. Unlike many other gorges, the path climbs steadily uphill: through tunnels and up more than 200 steps, you gain around 115 metres in elevation alongside the Weissenbach stream. After about 45 minutes, the circular route leads back through an unspoilt mountain forest, surrounded by the Alpine scenery of the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site. Open daily from 14 May to 18 October 2026.
