Burgdorf

Burgdorf

In 1899, Europe’s first fully electrified railway line led through Burgdorf. Today, the municipality in the Emmental offers its visitors even more: exciting events, excursions and cultural diversity.

At the end of the 12th century, the Dukes of Zähringen founded Burgdorf and built a splendid residential castle. Today, Burgdorf Castle is Switzerland’s most complete and best-preserved Zähringen castle. The combination of youth hostel, museum, restaurant and civil wedding venue is unique. The castle hill offers ideal views of the Old Town with its patrician houses from the late Baroque period, the Bernese Alps and the granary quarter in the lower town. The Hotel Stadthaus offers the appropriate place to reside for all fans of glamour. Its luxury décor is only topped by the history of its location.
