The Chästeilet in Wengen celebrates Alpine traditions with cheese sales, folklore, a food market and live music. A lively festival for locals and visitors alike.

The Chästeilet in Wengen is one of the most traditional and popular events in the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Since 1999, the festival has brought together locals, visitors and Alpine farmers to celebrate the end of the Alpine summer and share the famous Wengen Alpine cheese. What once began with a few beer tables and a small barbecue has developed into a major event with over a thousand visitors. Today, the Wengen ice rink provides the atmospheric setting for two days of festivities full of alpine culture and culinary delights.

Living tradition in the Lauterbrunnen Valley

On Saturday, the large fair with a bar, barbecue and live music creates a lively atmosphere. On Sunday, the focus is on the traditional dividend distribution to the cow shareholders: around 1.3 tonnes of Alpine cheese change hands every year – an impressive sight and a highlight for anyone who wants to secure their own loaf. The programme is complemented by a show dairy, alphorn sounds, Trychler, traditional costume groups, stone pushing and a diverse gourmet market.
The Chästeilet combines living customs with warm hospitality and shows how vibrant Alpine culture can be today. A festival that must be experienced.
