Lenk Alpine Festival

Customs and traditions are a big part of everyday life in the Simmental valley. And the fortnight of AlpKultur® Days in Lenk offers guests an insight into this authentic and unspoilt Simmental way of life. There are lots of different workshops on offer. Participants have the opportunity to learn all about the art of Simmental silhouette paper cutting, weaving on a large loom, taking part in cattle judging competitions, making up some of the floral wreaths that adorn the cows, or trying their hand at hitting the ‘nouss’, or puck, at the Hornussen tournament, a traditional Swiss sport. The Forum for Music and Movement also offers courses on Swiss folk music throughout the fortnight.
Which one will be crowned the new Miss Dairy Cow?
At the Älplerfest alpine festival, the alpine dairy farmers proudly show off their dairy cows adorned with floral decorations and large cowbells. During each Züglete, or hourly procession, the cattle are beautifully showcased. The public then selects the new Miss Lenk from among the 25 first-ranked cows at the cattle shows. Plenty of folklore and the farmers’ market with delicious regional specialities make the Älplerfest a unique experience. The Älplerzmorge the following day is an invitation to the traditional Sunday brunch. The Hornussen wrestling tournament featuring around 250 active competitors from across Switzerland is held one week later and marks the end of the AlpKultur® Days in Lenk.
