Ballenberg Swiss Open-air Museum

The Ballenberg Swiss Open-air Museum preserves more than 100 original, traditional buildings from all parts of Switzerland, including impressive examples from the Bern Region. It brings rural culture, traditional crafts and history to life and deepens the understanding of Swiss identity. In various demonstrations, actors show how rural communities once lived and worked. In courses, you can try traditional crafts yourself and help keep this knowledge alive.

Pelzmartiga in Kandersteg

Things turn spooky at Christmas and New Year's Day when the Pelzmartiga, fearsome figures traditionally dressed in furs, rags, or fir branches, roam through Kandersteg and scare the locals and visitors alike.

Lenk Alpine Festival

Experience the traditions and living customs of the Simmental up close at the Lenk Alpine Festival. In workshops, participants learn the Simmental paper cutting technique or discover Hornussen, a traditional Swiss sport in which a small puck is struck with a flexible rod and defended by the opposing team. During the festival, herdsmen decorate their cows with flowers and present them to the public, which then crowns the most beautiful as Miss Lenk. Simmental cows are world famous and the highlight of the Lenk Alpine Festival.

Emmental Show Dairy

Since 1989, the show dairy has been open 365 days a year. Visitors can explore four former cheese dairies from different generations. In addition to fascinating facts and the history of this traditional Swiss product, guests even get the chance to learn how to make cheese themselves.
