International Woodcarving Symposium Brienz

Flying wood chips, the buzz of chainsaws and precision carving with a chisel: at the International Woodcarving Symposium in Brienz, artists will fashion large wooden sculptures within only five days.

Woodcarving has enjoyed a long tradition in Brienz. At the International Woodcarving Symposium, you can look over the shoulders of artists from around the world as they go about their work. The task for every carver is identical: all of the artists are given a solid log of local larch. They will then need to create a sculpture from this within five days. The approximately 20 invited carvers represent different woodcarving styles and cultures. All of their carving is done outside – directly alongside the lake on Brienz's quay.

Leisurely lakeside get-togethers

Rest assured that, whilst the carvers are going about their artistic endeavours, conviviality and sociability will not be short-changed. In the evenings, the free fringe programme will bring holidaymakers, locals and carvers together on the Cholplatz next to Lake Brienz, encouraging them to linger. Performances of traditional and modern music will round off the event. Every evening, the traditional meal which consists of a "Chäsbrätel" (a slice of bread topped with melted cheese) and other regional delicacies, will be complemented with a special culinary offer.
