Open air theatres

From July

Open-air theatre brings the stage outdoors, combining summer atmosphere, unique venues and memorable performances for a special cultural experience.

Lake Thun Festival

The Lake Thun Festival impressively shows just how popular open-air performances are: since its founding, it has already delighted more than 900,000 visitors. From 8 July to 22 August 2026, the lake stage in Thun will once again become a setting for great emotions. Against the backdrop of Lake Thun, the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, music, theatre and landscape come together to create a truly special experience. It is not without reason that the organisers call their stage the most beautiful lake stage in Europe. After musical successes such as Cats, West Side Story, Mamma Mia! and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, another international classic, Grease, will be on the programme in 2026.

Plays capturing the Zeitgeist and the past

Visitors to the Gürbetal Summer Theatre experience inspiring contrasts. The modern stage design is embedded in a tuff mine and regularly offers exciting performances. Switzerland’s history is brought to life with the “Wiliam Tell Open-Air Theatre”. Every year in Interlaken, the life of the Swiss folk hero Wilhelm Tell is performed on stage in a new adaptation. But this is not all the region has to offer in summer. Visitors are spoiled for choice with the Landschaftstheater Ballenberg, an open-air theatre established in 1991, and the Freilichtspiele Moosegg whose plays have a close link to the Emmental region.
