Bernese stories
These stories will give you a unique insight into the the life of the Bernese and the diversity of the region.
Summer stories
Where nature works with all its power.
The Grimsel region is full of treasures and stories. Renewable energy is now produced in the place where muleteers once left their mark on the trade routes. The Alpine granite landscape is host to an interplay of nature and technology, making the area around Haslital a particularly diverse destination for excursions.
Legendary Bern
Travelling by e-bike out of the city on the Gantrisch Legends Route.
On the move on the Via Alpina
In focus: the Queen’s stage from Griesalp to Kandersteg.
Take a break in Schadau Castle
Immersed in the era of castles and nostalgic paddle steamers: Will you join us in this enchanting world on Lake Thun?
Sleeping in a former prison wing
It's like travelling back in time: Lisa and Christoph stayed at the Boutique Hotel Schlossberg, the former prison wing of Thun Castle. Join them as they discover the charming Alpine town of Thun.
Flower power with panorama
The Schynige Platte offers inspiring panoramic views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau as well as Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. The secret star is the Botanical Alpine Garden, which contains more than 720 Swiss alpine plants just waiting to be admired. Paul Brunner and the team at the Alpine Garden care for the plants with great devotion – and are happy to answer the questions of curious visitors.
With the “vegetable mule” on Cycle Route 888
Bern is renowned for its old town. Visitors are less aware of the closeness to nature and the sustainable lifestyle in the city. “Vegetable mule” Thomas Wieland, represents both. He carries 200 kilograms of vegetables and fruit from his organic farm to the city every week on his e-bike and trailer.
That’s just how things are in Bern
People in the Swiss capital make time for one another and make the effort to listen. This atmosphere gives the city a real sense of creativity and identity. Bern produces characteristic beer and unmistakable music. Alexander Balajew and Lukas Hasler can do both. They are part of a city that has found its own pace.
The goatherd of Bern
Aged just 13, Adrian Mäder is a devoted goatherd. In the summer holidays each year, he and his parents make delicious goat’s cheese on Alp Bire in Gantrisch Nature Park. Those embarking on the family-friendly Alp Birehubel circular hike can stop off at the farm and try the cheese for themselves at the family’s snack bar.
Where Goethe left his mark
In his book “Ferne Berge im Sonnenschein” (Distant mountains in the sunshine), Jürgen Pachtenfels follows in the footsteps of Goethe’s second trip to Switzerland through the Bernese Oberland in October 1779. He makes amusing comparisons between days past and present, revealing some of the poet’s unknown sides.
Swimming in the Aare with the Mayor of Bern
Most of the Bernese – ranging from workmen to professors – go swimming in the Aare river in summer. Even prominent politicians can be seen here in their swimwear: take the Mayor of Bern, Alec von Graffenried, for example, who can be regularly seen splashing around in the Aare in summer.
Almost like in days gone by
Flour from the village mill, fresh butter from the cheese dairy, and a delicious biscuit that’s based on a recipe more than a century old: on the trail of the Kambly Bretzeli through Emmental on an e-bike, you’ll have the feeling of taking a trip back into the past.
In whey heaven
The healing power of nature is an important part of Swiss wellness: on Alp Turnels above Gstaad, you can bathe in fresh whey after a magical hike.
Eye to eye with an ibex
The group peers intently through their binoculars at the rugged rock wall of the Niederhorn ridge. All they want to see are ibex and chamois – as many as possible and as close as possible!
Along the Aare river – stage 1
We are travelling in three stages from the source of the Aare river to Lake Biel. With a length of 295 kilometres, this longest river in Switzerland flows through wild mountain landscapes, crosses mystical gorges and swings around the Swiss capital in an elegant arc before meandering through the Seeland and into Lake Biel.
Along the Aare river – stage 2
The second stage of our journey along the Aare has us floating on the water – on a rubber dinghy, a tube, a kayak or a stand-up paddle board – for although there are various ways to travel between Thun and Bern, the river route is by far the prettiest.
Along the Aare river – stage 3
The Aare river meanders 50 kilometres through the countryside between Bern and Biel. We cover this third stage of our journey on bikes. Except for a few stretches, this route takes us along country roads and hence it is very suitable for families riding together.
Winter stories
A hotel made of snow and ice
Hidden beneath the metre-thick layer of snow and ice, fully equipped igloo-style rooms for more than 40 people can be found, complete with sanitary facilities, electricity and even a hot tub. One of those responsible for looking after them is Canadian Morgan Heidecker.
Kayaking in winter
Kayaking in winter is everything except cold. Warming drysuits guarantee an experience of next-level comfort on the wintry Lake Brienz. Something that Dave Storey discovered for himself. He shows his guests steep rock faces, mystical and moody views and the power of nature.
From pitchforks to mountain hut coffee
If you’re looking for a charming place to take a well-deserved break after a day on the piste, the Chumi Hut in Adelboden is just the place. Farmer and hut warden Hansueli Hari spoils his guests in a laid-back atmosphere.
Heaven on earth
Getting there is half the fun when heliskiing in Gstaad. It might just be that one of only few female professional pilots in Switzerland is in the cockpit.
The world’s most honest ski slope reporter
Every week, in his own refreshingly authentic way, ski patroller Jürg gives a live update on the snow and weather conditions in the ski area in Lenk.
